  39.         In order to create a font, you need only invoke Metafont, set 
  40.         a mode for a device, and input one of the general font files.

  45.            The intent of the Pandora project is to test the ideas and
  46.         power of Metafont in a design context. The starting point
  47.         came from broad ideas about type, rather than trying to
  48.         create a specific predetermined typeface. 
  49.            One strong driving force was the idea to create a generalized
  50.         description of the visual relationship between characters in a
  51.         typeface. This is far from saying that similar characters use
  52.         parts that are "cut and pasted" directly from one to another.
  53.         This is how a "straight arm" and "curved arm" came to be in the
  54.         same macro, though they are visually quite different.
  55.            Many parameters create an endless variety of possibilities.
  56.         The concern was to create a basis from which a "reasonable"
  57.         and readable set of fonts might be derived. It's not important
  58.         that all variations work, rather, that it's possible to find
  59.         a reasonable set within the basis. A rich description allows
  60.         a designer to quickly look at a number of possibilities.
  61.            The character sets for the fixed width font and for the 
  62.         variable width fonts correspond to those which Don Knuth used
  63.         in the Computer Modern family of fonts. This was done 
  64.         intentionally so that we would have compatible and 
  65.         interchangeable character sets. The compatibility ends there. 
  66.            All of the fonts are currently set for 10 pt type,
  67.         except pntt9.mf, which is set for 9 pt type. Pntt9.mf (Pandora
  68.         Single Pitch 9 works out to 15 characters per inch). Hooks
  69.         have been put in for point size changes as well as for
  70.         boldness.
